Portrait of Jorge Gomez

Emmy-nominated · nearly 20 years telling stories

I’m an Emmy-nominated storyteller and editorial leader who finds the human story inside complex missions.

For nearly 20 years I’ve been handed subjects I didn’t yet understand and asked to make people care about them. The job isn’t the shoot. It’s deciding what the story is actually about: which of an organization’s stories are worth telling, why they matter, whose perspective should lead, and what the work has to say to reach the people it’s for. Then guiding a team to execute that.

Twenty years of directing, shooting, and editing sit underneath every one of those calls. That’s why they hold up in production.

Strategy with a pulse

Emmy-Nominated Education Storytelling

Creative Direction · Producer · Cinematographer · Editor

Kean and SENAI students in Brazil, reimagining sustainable and equitable housing. There was no script and no predetermined story. I found the why on location, then produced, shot and edited the film around it. Nominated for a 2026 New York Emmy.

Documentary · Culture · Identity

Creative Direction · Producer · Director · Cinematographer

A documentary about Julio, a lifelong Bronx resident who in 1995 invited Fidel Castro to dinner at his restaurant, La Sierra Maestra. Official Selection at NBC News' Meet the Press Film Festival with AFI, and selected for 12 film festivals.

Community Safety · Civic Storytelling

Cinematographer

“Public Safety in Public Hands” for NowThis: how Newark rethought public safety by putting it in the community’s hands. I was contracted for the camera and stayed for the subject. Civic work like this is my range, not a detour from it.

Broadcast Production · Crew Leadership

Director of Photography

A Fat Joe segment for the BET Hip Hop Awards, shot at his house with no studio and no lighting grid. As director of photography I led camera, lighting and audio to build a working set inside a room never meant for one. Aired nationally on BET.

Award-Winning Alumni Storytelling

Creative Direction · Editor

More than 100 photographs and a set of vertical iPhone clips, in every format and quality. I built them into one cohesive film about lifelong connection to NYU. Winner of a Communicator Award and a W3 Award.

Advocacy · Strategic Storytelling

Cinematographer · Editor

A petition film for Change.org about Tigray, told through Mabel and her family rather than through the news. I shot and cut the film and helped shape the story toward her reason for starting the petition. The petition drew around 25,000 signatures.

Where I add value

The problems I'm hired to solve

What I decide

Editorial judgment

  • Story Development

The work matters, but people outside can't see why.

I find the person, the conflict, and the larger meaning inside an organization, community, or issue, so complex work becomes a story people follow and remember.

  • Editorial Direction

There's plenty of footage and still no story.

I set the angle, decide whose perspective leads, and guide the work through revision and approvals without losing the idea that made it worth making.

  • Multimedia Strategy

Lots of videos ship; none of them add up.

I build repeatable programming and content systems that ladder up to organizational goals, so content earns its keep instead of piling up.

How it gets made

Execution and craft

  • Creative Direction

Everyone agrees on the strategy; nobody can picture the film.

I translate strategy into interviews, visual language, structure, tone, and pacing: one clear creative vision a whole team can execute.

  • Production Leadership

Productions keep slipping on logistics, stakeholders, and scope.

I lead crews, schedules, stakeholders, and creative decisions from prep through delivery, protecting both the quality and the deadline.

  • Hands-On Craft

Some stories can't be handed off.

I still produce, direct, interview, shoot, and edit when the story requires it. Twenty years of doing the work is why my editorial calls hold up in production.

Editorial Method

Strong stories don't start with a shoot. They start with knowing what the story is.

  1. Enter

Arrive without the story. Learn the mission, the people, and the audience before deciding anything.

  2. Find the Why

Locate the human reason this matters, underneath the institutional reason for making it.

  3. Choose the Lead

Decide whose experience carries the story, and whose does not.

  4. Set the Angle

Commit to what this piece is about, which means naming what it will not be.

  5. Direct Against It

Every interview, frame, and cut answers to the angle, so a whole team executes one idea.

  6. Shape for the Audience

Build the final version for the people it is for and the platform it lives on.

About

Still curious. Just more strategic.

I’m a Dominican-American storyteller shaped by Brooklyn, the Bronx, documentary filmmaking, and nearly two decades of turning complex missions into clear, human stories.

The best stories do more than explain the work. They help people feel why it matters.
